2023-2024 The AFT is the largest public employee union in the AFL-CIO with 1.7
million members. The AFT Public Employee Department supports AFT members and
leaders in government employee local unions at every level: city,
county/borough/state and federal workers. The department is the most varied of
all of AFT locals, with more than 3,000 job titles represented in our local
unions. Job Duties: Intern will assist with collective bargaining analysis and
organizing research, and the development of short staffing and technology
campaigns designed to support local union expansion and to improve the lives of
workers in government. Interns will investigate, organize and analyze data
relevant to organizing drives and assist with written reports. Interns in the
AFT Public Employee Department receive hands-on experience with the wide-ranging
activities of our small department. Requirements: This position is available
from May 15 to August 15 and preference will be given to those able to work on a
full-time basis. This is an in-person internship based at our national
headquarters in Washington D.C. Qualifications: Candidates should have a
commitment to labor/social justice organizing; good writing and communication
skills and an ability to learn quickly. Work or volunteer experience with
progressive/activist organizations is helpful. Familiarity with online
databases, Excel and related applications is required. Financial Compensation:
The salary ranges from $17 per hour (undergraduate student) to $20 per hour
