The WJP’s Data Analytics and Research teams are looking for a full-time, paid intern with a computer science or data science background for a six-month position with the possibility of extension up to one year. This position will contribute to data collection and analysis on the status of the rule of law in the European Union. This position will report directly to one of our Senior Data Analysts. This is a current vacancy, with an immediate start.

This position will be based in the WJP Washington, DC office. WJP maintains a hybrid in-office/remote work schedule. Staff and interns are expected to be located within commuting distance of our DC office, and to work from that office at least three days per week.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Write reproducible scripts and workflows to collect, clean, and analyze data to answer key public policy questions.
  • Assist with managing large databases, as well as analyzing, filtering, and processing data.
  • Assist with primary data collection processes by developing and utilizing innovative programming tools.
  • Provide support to visualize data, write descriptions and summaries of projects, and create presentations of results.
  • Assist in automating graphs and dashboards for print and web.
  • Proactively provide ideas and critical feedback on data collection methodologies.

Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree (completed or currently pursuing) in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or related field. 
  • Superior coding skills and proficiency in statistical programming languages (R preferably), and data analysis including, but not limited to, data mining, descriptive statistics, and data visualization.
  • Experience with Git. 
  • Experience with survey data analysis.
  • The ability to learn new approaches and techniques as the need arises.
  • Prior experience/proven ability managing large databases. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly and efficiently and ability to give and receive feedback. 
  • Highly dependable with the ability to work in a team-oriented environment. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, excellent problem-solving skills, and attention to detail. 
  • Understanding of rule of law and governance issues in global contexts.
  • English fluency is required; proficiency in additional EU languages and/or Arabic is strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements

While performing the responsibilities of the job, this person will frequently be required to use finger dexterity as well as sufficient hand dexterity to use a computer keyboard and be capable of reading a computer screen. This person may need to remain seated for long periods of time, have the ability to perform repetitive motions, grasp objects, including a writing instrument, stand, communicate verbally and hear well enough to detect nuances, and receive detailed information. This person may be required to walk, push or pull objects, bend, squat, reach, or kneel. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision for extensive reading. Working Conditions

The work conditions described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing this job. This person will typically work indoors in a heated and air-conditioned office, with a mixture of natural, incandescent and fluorescent light with low to moderate noise levels.
